Early Signs Of Glaucoma

The Early Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that gets worse over time. However, when it is diagnosed early, some treatments can help to slow down the progression of this disease. To be diagnosed early, you have to go for your regular, annual eye exams so that you can be properly tested for this disease. If you need an eye exam, call Eye Care Specialists of Oklahoma to schedule an appointment with our ophthalmologist, Dr. Jackson.

Early Symptoms

When fluid builds up in the front area of the eye, it puts pressure on your optic nerve. Over time, this nerve becomes irreparably damaged. This is what causes glaucoma. When you are aware of the early symptoms, you can watch for them to have this disease diagnosed and treated early.

There are visual distortions that you may have in the early stages of this disease. Having a blind spot in your vision or having less sharp vision are both common symptoms. If you see what looks like halos when you look at lights such as headlights and street lights, this can also be a symptom. If your eyes hurt or you feel abnormal pressure in them, as if you had a sinus infection that was in your eyes, it’s important to be tested for glaucoma as soon as possible.

If you look in the mirror and the white part of your eyes looks cloudy, get tested right away. Your eyes may also begin to look red every day. Early glaucoma can also give you nausea and sometimes vomiting as well as serious headaches that come on suddenly. If you look at lights and see rainbows around them, or rings in many colors, this is a sign of this eye disease.
