Top 5 Causes of Dry Eye
Dry eye is caused by an imbalance in the tear film protecting the surface of the eyes. At Eye Care Specialists of Oklahoma in Midwest City and Edmond, we can treat a variety of eye conditions including dry eye. Let’s look at a few of the factors that can lead to dry eye.
Aging
The number one cause of dry eye is getting older and if you are a woman, your chance of suffering from dry eye is even greater. Tears are important to the health of your eyes. When you produce fewer tears or the quality of your tears is poor, it results in eyes that are uncomfortable and prone to eye infections. Up to 30% of individuals over the age of 65 will suffer from the symptoms of dry eye.
Medication
Most medications have some side effects. Dry eye is a side effect of some medications including antihistamines, antidepressants, Parkinson’s medication used to treat tremors, hormone replacement therapy, high blood pressure medication, and birth control pills.
Environment
If you live in a dry climate it can also dry out your eyes. Even if the climate outside isn’t dry, if the atmosphere inside your home or office is dry it can cause dry eyes. Be aware of pollutants in the air and avoid smoking or being around smokers whenever possible.
Vitamin A Deficiency
Being deficient in vitamin A can lead to the discomfort of dry eyes. You can take a supplement, or you can increase your intake of dairy products, green leafy vegetables, cantaloupes, orange fruits, and veggies.
Reduced Blinking
If you aren’t blinking enough you are likely to end up with dry eye. Staring at a computer screen all day is a major contributor, and it is just as bad if it is a tablet, TV, or phone.
